let me state for the record that both of today's exam papers were HORRIBLE!! i din even complete half of each!! well if it is any consolation... all my frends did only abt 40% as well for lebesgue... and for field... hanmao din do arnd 2-3 questions... so if he gets A+ i will get my B+ la...

waaah run'er i must say that ur prayers really did work... all that i did not want to come out din come out... except for cyclotomic polynomials... haha... but the problem wuz the rest of the questions were very difficult also... arrrgghh...

qts kept saying... dun be too stressed... i dun expect u to be able to give me a full solution... just a rough idea will do... hahaha arrrrgggh... haha y must he set such a tough paper in the first place?? haha...

and apparently... some of the questions for field theory came from serge lang's book... i mean who reads serge lang's book... not any normal undergraduate lor... haha that book is super cheeeeem... urrrghhh... watever... it's over... time to prepare for my favourite 2 papers... haha graph and DO... woo... ciao!!

today... exams begin... i've never been so nervous in my entire life... haha... seriously... i dunno wat is up with this exams... haha anyway if u happen to read this b4 1300h help me pray that Lp spaces and bounded variations only come out in one question and that the rest of the 5 qns will be on measuribility of sets and of functions, lebesgue integrals, lebesgue calculus... haha

then if u read this b4 1700h... help me pray that insolvability of the quintic will not come out and for the focus of the exam to be largely on finite field structures... haha oh oh and no cyclotomic polymonials and extensions too!! haha

arrrghhh i have a knack for spotting questions... haha just that i spot them by praying they wun come out... sad life hor... haha oh well... nvm after today life's a lot better... really prepared for graph theory and discrete is actually quite fun to study... haha

like i sed to my frends yesterday... hope lebesgue and galois dun trample over my dead corpse today... haha... heading over to the warzone soon... ciao!

today marks (possibly) my final week as a undergrad... haha 4 (including today) more days to the exam and 6 to the end of exams... haha... strive on!!!

hmmm watched the discovery special last night titled "rameses:wrath of god or man"... well the story puts forth an interpretation of the book of exodus that challenges long held beliefs... well personally i believe that the bible was written in a more metaphorical sense rather that it being a factual historical account... in fact, my sis tells me that many faithful now believe the adam and eve story to be of a symbolism of some sort rather than it actually happening...

anyway, together with the fact that the large population of all the faithful are not able to read hebrew and thus are not able to read the bible in its original script or are able to read hebrew but have already read the bible in their younger days in some other language and thus would have some deep set preconvieved notions abt its contents, already suggests that we should not be taking these accounts word for word since after all... each word may have been mistranslated anyway...

for instance... what is refered to as the red sea in and english version of the bible, is (in y opinion) quite a bad mistranslation... apparently... the water body refered to in the hebrew text when translated directly to english reads "REED SEA"... nuff sed...

anyway this reed sea business has quite a bit of significance in the show... cos they apparently discovered a tomb which they believed contained the bodies of rameses' sons... including one believed to be the first born... thought to have been struck down by god during his final plague... well... most people seem to believe that the first born of rameses was a child when he was struck down... and yet evidence on temple monuments and orthe loctaions in egypt have shown that the first son of rameses did indeed live to become the commander in chief of his army... hardly a title u would delegate to a child... in fact... they believe during the exodus... when apparently rameses had a change of heart and decided to go after the hebrews with 600 plus chariots... the person actually chasing the hebrews was in fact the son of Rameses because firstly Rameses would be in his 50s or 60s and medical studies have shown that he suffered from severe arthritis which would make his cahriot chase quite a challenge for him... secondly, rameses lived to a ripe old age of 90 outliving many of his wives and even his children...

so wat has the reed sea got to do with anything? well... instead of crossing the red sea en route to their holy land...the hebrews would have passed a marshland of some sort... it is here that they believe is the location refered to... another mistranslation would be the description of the hebrews leaving egpyt... where most pple believe it to be 600 000 unarmed people,... scholars now believe that the number was in fact only a modest few thousands and that these people were in fact armed... so a likely scenario would be that suspecting that the egyptians would come after them, moses lead them to the marshlands where they set up an ambush... the soft grounds there disabled the chariots and with smoke and fire the hebrews easily finished of the army sent to erradicate them and even possibly killed the son of rameses, the leader of the assault...

well.. i think i wun have time to continue.. but all i can say is that the docu has provided me with a very insightful account of the events leading up to the exodus... one major part in fact was that there is a possiblilty that the hebrew religion was in fact a manifestation of one of the religions of the egyptians that rameses tried to erase becos he demmed it as being pagan... and it is this religion that many believe is the birth of monotheism in history... in fact, the documentary is able to provide a very good alternate scenario that is very believable and that covers all the grounds of whatever is mentioned in the bible... but without the supernatural... so to a math person like myself... it seems highly likely... haha...

okie nuff sed for today... maybe i'll talk abt the 10 plagues later... but for now i shall begin with discrete optimization... haha... ciao!!

urrrgghhh... too bad i forgot to take a photo of the cubicle which i have been studying in for at least 12 hours a day for the past few days... haha pity i din discover this place earlier... haha well it's in the honours room.. haha sounds elitist rite... haha well it's a nice and cosy room la... haha with 2 cubicles... i'm amazed at the enviroment it provides for studying... i mean with food in my bag (we're technically not supposed to eat in there... but... hahaha) i can sit there for 12 hours straight from 9am to 9 pm and study non stop without even feeling sleepy... amazing right? but then when i reach home... usually i fall asleep straight away... well i guess it's really safe to say this is the hardest i've every studies for any exam... including the O's and the A's... haha

anyway today's another mugging day... oh well...

hmm... mom showed me an article yesterday in the newspaper abt this psc schoalr who's getting flamed for some apaprently "racist" comments he made on his blog... waaah... so bloggers out there better be careful... personally i havent seen anything he has written but i do argee with one of the comments made by this person in some forum... she sed the stuff he wrote was prob interpreted in the wrong context.. i mean sometimes we all just wanna complain and whine about something right?? esp when we're irritated with things and so we say stuff that we dun really mean but it's sort of an outlet for us... well i havent read the stuff he's written but i think people are seriously making a mountain out of a molehill... chill out pple... there are things more important than to scrutinize the personal blog of an individual...

anyway watched discovery channel's "the year without summer" and i must say it's quite a good production... i never knew anything related to the eruption of 1815... haha i really "hate" discovery channel... haha i feel as if i'm not doing enough with my life everytime i watch new docus from the channel... and wat's more next week is egypt week... and there's this docu titled "rameses: wrath of god or man"... intriguing... cos the bible sed that the last plague set upon the egyptians by god wuz the death of all first born... well apparently there could be scientific evidence to show that the son of rameses could have been murdered... by man... well i've always been interested in egyptology but this really is the icing on the cake... haha

haha and i quote the discovery channel webbie... haha so those interested watch discovery sunday this sunday evening!!!

"In tomb KV5 in Egypt's Valley of the Kings, witness the excavation of four skulls believed to be those of Rameses elder sons. Using the latest forensic science, Prof. Weeks hopes to identify one of the skulls as Amun-her-khepeshef – firstborn son of Rameses and the man the Bible says was struck down by God. Further evidence leads to another startling Biblical connection: Rameses may indeed be the father of Moses, who rejected his father's will and delivered thousands of slaves from bondage. "

okie still got work ta do... haha looking forward to the end of the exams

urrrghh... i dun feel like typing liddat anymore... it makes my entires sound so... made up... urrrggh...

anyway... nus sent me the offer package liao... yeah got into nus graduate studies programme... but then no research scholarship... damn... aiyah hopefully they din give to any of us cos we have grad yet... hope once kj and terence withdraw there will be more vacancies and i'll get it... pray pray pray... haha

anyway today played tennis again... a bit red... wat's new... haha... going to play badminton with francis spencer and RV weiqian... been a while since i played with them... haha...

urrrggghhh i must save up enough money to go france in dec... hopefully i can get a job during the juen hols... but i better clear with moe first... must really start working liao la... bank account deadly low... arrrrggghhh... hmm i shall go look at the terms and conditions of my bond... haha... waah i can't believe i'm already planning my holidays... hmmm let's see... 13 more days and i'll be thru... think will wait for results b4 i find a job... hmmm ok then at least i can say i'm a grad so cn demand more $$$ haha... anyway gotta read robinsons for group and some book on representation theory... yeah decided i might as well follow up with tkm... heard scary things abt lang... haha...

oh anyway today's a good day... both henin hardenne and dementieva made it to the finals of the family circle club... haha how cool is that... it's been a while since 2 players i support met in the finals... haha... and wat's more... they're playing on clay... GREEN clay... haha... anyway on the atp side... coria playing nadal... hope coria wins but i think nadal shld la... he deserves it...

hmm i find it amazing that i'm blogging so much now... haha considering my exams are near... i guess this is like a form of stress relief... haha anyway maybe i shld just write the things i have left to do... i'm behind schedule liao... studying speed dropped in the last few days... been rather lethargic... information retention not at optimum level... haha anyway i aim to clear the whole of fraleigh by tmr... i'm more than halfway thru but the later half is tougher than i expected... after that i must rush thru lebesgue... then start redoing tutorials... urrrghh... wat life is this... i better get my As this sem... hope tkm wuz kind enuff to gimme A- (i noe lst would be kind enuff i thinhk...)

mum asked me if i wanted to give tuition to some kid... who stays in the east... having problems with math c... haha i think i would have accepted if he din stay in the middle of nowhere... haha... i mean i dun give tuition primarily cos the bulk of students are generally of o level std so u gotta give tuition in more than 1 subj... and since math is my speciality i dun want to destroy the foundation they have in otehr subj that's y i only wanna teach math... so jc is the way to go... haha roon sooo lucky... direct staff of hwa chong... haha... man... i hope either rj or hc takes me la... haha rj cos i like the enviorment and hc since i already know one person there... hahaha... anyway i really wonder wat is the real trade off when one resigns from moe to become direct staff... besides the civil servant benefits which i dun see as being overwhelmingly sttractive... haha i dun see any reason y anyone would not want to just become a direct staff...

okie... time to wash up and get out of the house... ta! (rather abrupt end hor.. haha cos my contact lenses hurt... haha)

i was watching tv last night. yes after my studying hour. watched an episode of some crime night thing on discovery channel. was about some paramilitary orgamisation regarding some domestic terrorism in the us. anyway it brought back interesting memories during NS. in particular ocs. in fact, one of the scenes triggered a memory which i had almost forgotten. so i better write it down now lest i forget about it totally.

anyway i was already in faocc by then. so we were doing some fo (forward observer) exercise in groups. so the initial phase was to be inserted in the cover of the night. so we had to navigate thru the greens of pasir laba to reach our op. anyway i cant even recall who was in the same group as me but i think we decided to risk it and not bash through the jungles. so we skimmed the forests along this major road which was supposed to have an armoured patrol. thankfully we didnt encounter anything. well anyway on reaching about 300m from the base of the hill we were suppose to climb to set up our op, we were so elated that we got there without incident that we basically came out of the forest and started to walk in the open to the trail leading up the hill. then suddenly we heard someone shout "HALT!". so we all froze and we knew we were caught but instinctively someone wispered "1,2,3..." and we all made a dash for the vegetation fringing the trail up the hill. whilst running the 100 odd meters to the vegetation, there blanks were fired and thunderflashes thrown at us. adrenaline rush. we all literally dove straight into the bushes and started to crawl deeper into the vegetation. then we heard the sound of people bashing through the vegetation and the noise of engines raring along the trail. so we pushed ourselves laterally into the vegetation and then froze there. there we waited for i dont know how long before the headlights of the vehicles disappeared and the sound of menacing footsteps vanished. then we waited somemore just in case before we made our slow climb up the hill. hahahaha i think that was the initial time we actually did something like that. beacause in the army, when you are training, normally you are expected to react in a certain way like if you are in a confined space and ambushed then u charge towards the fire etc etc. and because instructors are usually around, you really need to follow these guidlines. but for the insertion exercise, we were left to our own devices so i guess we behaved according to our instincts (and luckily we got away with it this time. otherwise we would have to redo our insertion again). well i dont know but yea it is a rather terrifying experience to be standing in the open looking at the trees around you and hearing a voice coming form them without even being able to tell where the voice is coming from much less see the person shouting at you. i mean it's already nerve wrecking enough if it's just a simulated exercise, but what more if it happens in real war. then i guess the fight or flight response will try to overwhelm you. but yes now that i think about it, it does bring back nice memories. good material to chat over lunch with my buddies too! haha

anyway, as for studying, i'm a little behind time. i'm actually only starting on galois theory after i finish this and i'm supposed to be doing exercises now. well nevermind. anyway nus sent me a funny mail yesterday. the title of the mail reads "Offer Letters - Aug 2005 Intake" anyway it doesnt say if i am accepted or not. but rather, just informs me of the enrolment date for graduate students. so i dont know if i am accepted and if i got the grant. oh well shall wait for the letter in the mail. ok back to galois for me now. ciao!

exams in 2 weeks time. starting with lebesgue and field and followed shortly after by graph and discrete. ok this sem i'm going to perofrm a terence-logic triple. which means i'm gonna get A even though my grades are about average in class only. specifically for lebesgue field and graph. dont know why i seem to have more confidence for discrete.

anyway i went to look for tkm today. chatted with him a little. he sed lst was very impressed with my presentation but both of them felt i could have handled the interview better. well what can i say? i dont even know if that is a good sign. for those who dont already know, the interview makes up to 30% of my grade while the talk 10%. i feel that my thesis which makes up 50% is quite ok because he only made a few superficial changes to certain proofs. tkm also sed "well it's over. so dont worry about it anymore. concentrate on your exams. you'll know hat you will get when the results come out." i mean "DUH!" =) well if that line came from anybody else i would probably have guessed that i got a B+ because i believe that i am rather good at reading people. but tkm is really one of the few i really cannot read. i think i'm able to handle certain interviews or academic oral examinations well becasue i can tell by the examiners expression if i am going the right way. i did that for lst during the interview. but when tkm starts talking, he face doesnt twitch a bit. sort of like a professional poker player. i cant tell anything by looking at him or by listing to his tone. and he always lets you finish, waits a few seconds, before he says what he has to say. so in this case, i really cannot tell what he means when he said that.

after talking about my report, we started talking about non-acad related stuff like the politics in the dept and stuff like that. really quite hilarious. oh and for trhose who intend to take metric spaces or topology next semester, there is a chance that he may be taking them. he was saying he hasnt touched metric spaces since he was an undergraduate which i believe was more than 10 years ago. =P

anyway elizabeth's talk is in 1.5 hours time. was always very impressed with her topic and presentation. "fixed point free automorphisms" wow sounds very errm, for lack of a better word, "CHEEM" for the uninitiated right? (oh and by the way, it seems some people who read my blog have stated to use that exact phrase too right heh heh =P). anyway, gotta go get ready for school and to do some fraleigh later on. tkm offered to help me with field (so nice right?) so i have to read up everything up to and including galois theory first. till the next time i blog, to those studying for exams or having practicum, work hard for the remaining weeks, to those enjoying life overseas, go out and have more fun instead of just playing cards (haha), to those preparing for the O levels, all the best and you can look for me if you need help in math. remember the poster below: justine henin hardenne says impossible is nothing!!! hahaha feeling lame but anyway ciao!

well. i think i cleared my first hurdle by the skin of my teeth. hopefully still in contension for A- (and of the uninitiated, our math dept is really very stingy about giving anyone higher than a B+ for their honours thesis). well i personally thought the talk went quite well and some friends told me it was great but of course, due to the nature of the subject material, those highly brilliant ones like hanmao felt it was too BORING. =) well to each his own right?

then following the talk, i was given a 10 minute break before my interview, which thankfully was held in tkm's office. a place i've already grown accustomed to. lst started the interview asking me to show him the matrix associated with type A_4 graph which i did pretty easily and then he asked me to explain how the finite reflection groups must necessarily have positive definite graphs which i think i did with ease as well. i think that was all he asked. then tkm started to ask. he asked me about how the orthogonal transformation must have with it an associated matrix that is orthogonal. fumbled a bit before i managed to get teh answer. then on a related note he asked me for the converse to some statement i wrote. luckily i preempted that question so i answered it without thought. then came the difficult part. he asked me if every reflection was diagonalizable. horro of all horrors. linear algebra!!! something with i took years ago. sweat started to trickle down my forehead. literally. i was so completely stumped. anyway after bluffing my way through by saying that all reflections must have symmetric matrices and therefore definately diagonalisable, tkm asked me to consider a basis and to tell him what basis i would consider. thankfully i caught the hint then and managed to give a rather shaky but correct answer.

then for the second last question, tkm asked me if any other element in a FRG would also hence be diagonalisable. after going through the education system, it is perhaps instinctive that the answer is no. but i just could not justify why. so lst hinted that i should consider eigenvectors and eigenvalues. again!! linear algebra!! i must have completely forgotten about linear algebra even though we studied eigenvectors and eigenvalues in jc!! but thankfully i remembered some of the properties and eventually gave another correct by unconfident answer. then the killer question came. tkm sed "so now we know non-reflection elements cannot be diagonalisable over R so are they diagonalisable over C?" that one i was completely stumped. then tkm turned to lst and they both laughed and tkm said to lst "actually i don't think he would know that property." so they decided to just explain the answer to me. and that was the end.

ahhhh. so refreshing now after the interview. supposed to see tkm today to get back my paper so that i can make changes for the final submission. going to give myself a break today and relax a bit before starting to up the pace towards the exams. everytime i walk into my room i see this poster on my wall.

inspiration. i will perform a terence-logic triple this semester. ok i won't be able to do it if i continue typing this entry so that's all folks. ciao!

today marks the day i stride over my first hurdle and laugh at defeat in his face. talk starts in approx 15 hours time in the CRA. dont know y i'm so nervous. i think its cos of the interview afterwards. somehow the more i prepare, the more i seem to forget. so i guess i should just go sleep now =)

for all those out there who have the free time to pray for me, please pray for me to have the fortitude to answer all the questions thrown at me if not fully then partially. will be eternally grateful.

deep breaths deep breaths. gosh i feel like i'm about to give birth =p well time to really get some shut eye. good nite to all out there!

ok. i've decided that i shall now type my blog in largely grammatically correct sentences. though i cant help it if my orthography is not to match.

life's going to be pretty hectic the for the next 3 weeks in my life as preparations for examinations begin. i have my final talk and interview this tuesday and i have yet to do a dry-run for the actual presentation. well i guess i really cant go for the rj concert afterall. a big sorry to all for my non-attendance to all who have worked hard for the concert. good luck u guys!

oh yes happy birthday to mum this tuesday too.

sacrifices have to be made and i guess i know this fact all too well. so i guess giving up three weeks of liberty for 4As is quite a worthwhile decision. hopefully i dont burn out. i seem to have a rather diminished capacity to study nowadays.

oh yes. tkm offered me a master's thesis proposal last tuesday. something regarding representation theory which i know nothing about and so i will have to read up extensively this holidays. but i'm actually looking forward to it! he also mentioned that if i really wanted to do a thesis in group theory that i should approach prof lang. well elizabeth should be asking him already unless of course she decides to change to berrick. well i'll leave any though of that till after the exams. for those interested, my exam starts on the 28th of this month, begining with lebesgue integration [and no we dont simply do integration anymore. in fact i cannot remember the last time i integrated anything. as mathematcians will say "leave that to the engineers" =)] in the afternoon and followed immediately by field theory [and for the uninitiated, the fields we are talking about here are not electric and magnetic fields but rather and abstract collection of numbers with operations for which the set of real numbers and compex number are excellant examples] in the evening. have a 1 day break after that followed by graph theory [again not what you would think. the graphs we study are not the graphs u plot on an x-y axis per se but rather a totally different concept] on saturday morning, followed closely in the afternoon by discrete optimization. it's the first time in my entire life that my exams actually span only 3 days in total.

well i've come up with an excellant study plan to etch that A+s on my result slip this semester. yes finally i will have to treat lt and yc to dinner.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

ok enough of that for now. time to sleep and prepare for field tomorrow. wish me luck guys!
